Many smartphones have an mobile phone with fm radio built right into them. That’s good news in emergencies, or if you want to save battery power or data usage. But, unfortunately, two-thirds of phones have that feature disabled. It’s not hard to see why. Companies want you to buy streaming music instead, and the broadcasters are fighting back.

The National Association of Broadcasters has been lobbying for mobile phone makers to require FM chips to be activated. The mobile industry, however, says that’s not what consumers want. Music rights groups are also fighting back. They want to make sure that whoever is playing music on your smartphone is getting paid for it.

Some manufacturers, like Motorola, still include the radio in their devices, and their FM radio app gets lots of good reviews. The app will work with Bluetooth speakers, wired earbuds and the FM radio chip on your phone (no Internet connection needed).

You can check which phones have the FM chip enabled by downloading the NextRadio app and seeing if it detects your device. It will work on a few older iPhones, too. It may take a few clicks and different menus to find the FM option, but it is there.

Some carriers have lists of devices that have FM capabilities, including off-contract and unlocked Android phones. The app will tell you if it detects the chip and which frequencies work. But, for most phones, the only way to use the app is by turning on the FM radio function, which will probably need a software update.
