The black and white POW/MIA flag, featuring the silhouette of a soldier bowed down and facing a guard tower and barbed wire, serves as a national symbol and reminder that we must never forget our soldiers who were either taken prisoner of war or went missing in action overseas. It remains one of the most popular organizational flags flown in the United States, selling in tens of thousands every year.

Honoring the Fallen: POW-MIA Flags Collection

The POW/MIA flag was designed by Newt Heisley and was first commissioned in 1970 by the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Action as its official flag. Heisley envisioned the symbol as a way to keep the nation’s conscience focused on those who had not returned from war and whose status was unknown. The flag is required to be displayed on all federal properties, including the White House; the US Capitol; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; and each national cemetery, as well as buildings containing the offices of the Secretaries of State, Defense, and Veterans Affairs.
